Warm radiators and cold taps is a very common combination, and it usually narrows the fault down to one or two parts. On a combi boiler, the diverter valve directs heat either to the radiators or to the hot water. When it sticks in the heating position, you get exactly this. A scaled-up plate heat exchanger or a flow sensor that does not register the tap opening can cause it too.

If you have a hot water cylinder, check the simple things first: is the hot water switched on at the programmer, is the cylinder thermostat turned up, and has a power cut reset the timer? A failed motorised valve is the other common cause.

Wednesbury has fairly hard water, which builds scale in combi boilers over time, so older combis are the ones we see this on most. It is usually a one-part repair.

What's involved

No Hot Water but Heating Works in Wednesbury, the right way

Combi or tank?

No hot water cylinder usually means a combi. A cylinder means a system or regular boiler.

Check the programmer

On tank systems, make sure hot water is on and the clock is right after any power cut.

Run a hot tap fully

Combis need a decent flow to fire. A slow trickle may not trigger the hot water.

Check the pressure

Low pressure can stop the boiler firing. About 1 to 1.5 bar is normal when cold.

Good to know

Common No Hot Water but Heating Works questions

Why do I have heating but no hot water?

Usually a sticking diverter valve on a combi, or a timer, thermostat or motorised valve on a cylinder system.

Does hard water cause it?

It can. Scale in the plate heat exchanger restricts hot water on combis.

Can I get hot water meanwhile?

If you have a cylinder with an immersion heater, switch that on until it is fixed.

Is it safe to use the heating?

Generally yes. A gas smell is different from a fault code. If you notice one, step outside, avoid switches and ring 0800 111 999, the gas emergency line.
