F.83 means the boiler lit, but the flow and return sensors did not see the temperature change they expected. That usually means there is not enough water moving through the boiler, so it stops before it can overheat.
Low pressure is the most common cause, then air, a sticking pump or a sensor fault. Check your manual for your model.
On the older Mesty Croft and Woods Bank systems, radiators and pipework often predate the boiler by decades. Pressure that drifts down over a few weeks is common, and F.83 is often the first sign.
If the pressure is low, top up using the filling loop as your manual shows. Then reset once.
Radiators cold at the top have air in them. Bleed them, then check the pressure again.
If the pressure falls again within days, there is a leak or a tired expansion vessel. Tell the engineer how often you top up.

No. The boiler stopped because the water side did not respond as expected. A gas smell is different from a fault code. If you notice one, step outside, avoid switches and ring 0800 111 999, the gas emergency line.
Good, but watch the gauge. If it drops again, there is a slow leak worth finding.
Often not. Many F.83 calls are pressure, air or a vessel that needs recharging.
